Working with children and students provides numerous benefits in terms of visual art creation. One of the benefits for students of completing the tasks in Visual Arts classes is their emotional expression through painting and drawing. Equally, if not to a greater extent, the teaching of Visual Arts brings numerous benefits when working with children with developmental disabilities. This thesis describes the research that was conducted during the second semester of the 2023/2024 school year. It took place at the Center for Education Ivan Štark in Osijek and presented a case study conducted through systematic observation of classes, during which the work of an art teacher with a student with autism spectrum disorder was recorded and analyzed. The thesis also presents the course and content of a related interview with the teacher. The results show that artistic creation unites various aspects of the cognitive, emotional, and social development of students. Children with disabilities can develop communication skills, creativity, and imagination through artistic activities like drawing, painting, and modeling, as artistic expression enables them to express their thoughts and feelings in a unique manner. Through art workshops and during Visual Arts classes, children can improve social interaction as well as develop fine motor skills and coordination. Artistic creation has a therapeutic effect on children, helping them cope with emotional challenges, reducing stress and anxiety, and increasing self-confidence. An individualized approach to art activities for children with disabilities enables adaptation to their specific needs, and art tasks such as solving problems, planning drawings, and reflecting on their work encourage the child's cognitive development. All of the above confirms the importance of including art activities in working with children with disabilities.
