Abstract
U ovome se radu osvrće na društvene mreže i njihov utjecaj na mentalno i fizičko zdravlje te na ideale ženske ljepote postavljanjem previsokih standarda koji su prosječnim ženama nedostižni. Brojna su istraživanja pokazala kako postoji snažna veza između društvenih mreža i problema mentalnoga zdravlja uzrokovanih nerealnim standardima ljepote, koje su masovni mediji postavili davno prije nego što su postojale platforme društvenih medija. U radu se prvo objašnjava pojam društvenih mreža, kako su nastale, koje se danas najčešće koriste te kakav utjecaj imaju na psihičko zdravlje pojedinca. Nadalje, obrađuju se teme, poput nedostataka samopouzdanja kao produkta društvenih mreža i poremećaja u prehrani, što je potkrijepljeno analizama i istraživanjima koje su znanstvenici provodili tijekom proteklih godina. Također, pobliže se prikazuje i položaj žena u masovnim medijima te kako su povijest i društvo utjecali na ideal ženske ljepote, od novina i časopisa pa sve do društvenih mreža. Svi su ovi čimbenici vrlo važni u shvaćanju pokušaja postizanja savršenstva na društvenim mrežama koje je gotovo nemoguće postići. U završnom dijelu rada ukratko je objašnjen novi pokret društvenih mreža, Body Positivity, koji polako briše konvencionalne standarde ljepote i donosi nove, modernizirane poglede na žensko tijelo i njegovu ljepotu. Cilj je rada što jasnije prikazati negativne strane društvenih mreža, ali i standarda ljepote s kojima se žene bore otkako postanu svjesne sebe i svoga tijela. Ovaj rad poziva na osvještavanje o problemima rodnih stereotipa, položaja žena u društvu i nerealnih standarda u medijima, kao i na društvenim mrežama.
Abstract (english)
This paper presents social media and its influence on women’s mental and physical health and on ideals of female beauty by setting too high standards which the average women find too hard to achieve. Many studies have shown that there is a strong connection between social media and mental health issues caused by unrealistic standards of beauty, set by mass media long before there even were social media platforms. The paper first explains the term of social media, the way they emerged, which of them are the most frequently used and their influence on mental health of individuals. Furthermore, topics such as lack of self-confidence as a product of social networks and eating disorders are covered, supported by analyzes and research conducted by scientists over the years. Also, the position of women in the mass media is shown in detail and how history and society have influenced the ideal of female beauty, from newspapers and magazines to social media. All these factors are considered important in understanding the attempt of achieving perfection on social media, which is almost impossible to do. Finally, there is a closer explanation of the new movement on social media which slowly erases conventional beauty standards and brings new, modernized outlook on female body and its beauty. The aim of the paper is to show negative sides of social media, but also beauty standards with which women fight ever since they become aware of themselves and their body. This paper brings attention to problems of gender stereotypes, women’s position in society and unrealistic standards in media, as well as on social media.
