Abstract
Ovaj se diplomski rad bavi analizom serije South Park kroz elemente vizualne semiotike, to jest proučava znakove i simbole u seriji. Serija je specifična po kontroverznim temama i animaciji. Koristi minimalističku animaciju kako bi se naglasile društvene i političke poruke. Semiotičkom analizom rad naglašava važnost animiranih filmova kao moćnog sredstva za kritiku društva i ideja koje bi bile teže prihvaćene u konvencionalnim filmovima. South Park koristi jednostavne vizualne znakove radi slojevite i lakše komunikacije s gledateljima. Također, omogućuje gledatelju simultano interpretirati dublje društvene poruke. Cilj ovoga istraživanja bio je identificirati ključne semiotičke elemente poput satire i društvenih kodova unutar odabranih epizoda, načine na koje serija koristi znakove i simbole za prikazivanje društvenih i političkih tema poput kapitalizma, političke korektnosti, religije i slobode govora te ispitati upotrebu kulturnih kodova. Osim toga, cilj je također dekonstruirati ideološke poruke koje se kriju iza humora i satire. U seriji South Park prisutni su kodovi sarkazma i sociokulturološki kodovi, pri čemu likovi funkcioniraju kao semiotički simboli različitih društvenih stereotipova, što seriji omogućava da parodijom i kritikom suvremenih društvenih fenomena poput političke korektnosti, konzumerizma i kapitalizma komunicira poruke na dvije razine značenja – denotativnoj i konotativnoj. Navedene teze obrazložene su u istraživačkom dijelu rada i podvrgnute odgovarajućoj analizi.
Abstract (english)
This thesis deals with the analysis of the series South Park through the elements of visual semiotics, that is, it studies the signs and symbols in the series. The series is specific for its controversial themes and animation. It uses minimalistic animation to emphasize the social and political messages in it. Through semiotic analysis, the paper emphasizes the importance of animated films as a powerful tool for criticizing society and ideas that would be more difficult to accept by conventional films. South Park uses simple visual cues for layered and easier communication with viewers. Also, it allows the viewer to simulatively interpret deeper social messages. The aim of this research was to identify key semiotic elements such as satire and social codes within selected episodes, how the series uses signs and symbols to portray social and political topics such as capitalism, political correctness, religion and freedom of speech, and to examine the use of cultural codes. In addition, deconstruct ideological messages that are hidden behind humor and satire. In the series South Park, codes of sarcasm and socio-cultural codes are present, whereby the characters function as semiotic symbols of various social stereotypes, which enables the series to communicate messages on two levels of meaning through parody and criticism of contemporary social phenomena such as political correctness, consumerism and capitalism - denotative and connotative. The stated theses are explained in the research part of the work and supported by appropriate analysis.
