This paper deals with defining the concept of costume and researching the functions of costumes for theater and film. The goal of this paper is to describe the creative path of research, reflection and creation of costumes for the characters of the author's film Safe Place. The costume as a means of non-verbal communication should express the characteristics and nature of the individual. Therefore, this paper emphasises the very identity of the character which should be read from the costume. Film costume design allows for a more challenging and detailed consideration of the costume. Because the camera loves details, every part of the costume was carefully considered in the realization of the costume design. In creative process, contemporary costumes that point out the problem of the individual and the influence of the environment and the media on today's youth were created. For this reason, the sociology of costumes as well as the influence and symbolism of colors in costumes were studied in the previous chapters. Each costume for the film Safe Place is mirroring the emotional and mental state of each character in the film. The goal of this paper is to cover the creative process of writing the script, creating a shooting plan, finding locations, actors, designing and realizing scenography and costumes for the film Safe Place. Through detailed research, sketching and thinking about the costume, creative and visually interesting costume designs were realized for all the characters in the film Safe Place.
